This summer, the grounds of Wallsend RFC will be transformed into a celebration of classic motoring, community spirit and family fun as the MG Northumbria Car Show rolls into town.
We caught up with event organiser Paul Whitchurch to find out what visitors can expect, why the event matters, and why Wallsend RFC was the perfect venue to bring it all together. More Than Just a Car Show For many people today, the MG badge is associated with the latest generation of SUVs. But as Paul explains, the story of MG goes much deeper. "MG stands for Morris Garages and was founded in 1924. Some of Britain's greatest sports cars have worn the MG badge over the last century. Sadly, as those traditional cars get older, so do many of their owners, and both are becoming increasingly rare."
The event is therefore about much more than displaying cars. It's about preserving a passion, sharing memories and introducing a new generation to some of Britain's most iconic vehicles. "Our overall aim is to share our passion for both traditional and modern classic cars. We want to bring together enthusiasts of all manufacturers and models from all backgrounds, showcase these wonderful vehicles and create a memorable day for families and the wider community."
A Day for the Whole Family. One thing that sets this event apart is its focus on making sure everyone enjoys the day. "Many car shows involve enthusiasts standing around talking cars while their partners and children get bored in the background," Paul laughs."We're making a real effort to entertain the whole family."
For younger visitors, there will be an all-day children's entertainment package including face painting, unlimited use of the bouncy castle, unlimited access to the gladiator duel attraction and a free bag of pick-and-mix, all for just £5. Meanwhile, adults can browse the vehicle displays, visit stalls, enjoy an ice cream and take advantage of the excellent refreshments on offer from Ed's Shed at Wallsend RFC. Around 100 vehicles are expected to attend, with entries arriving from across the North East, Scotland and even Lincolnshire. "Every adult has memories of a car they owned, a car their parents owned, or a dream car they always wanted. Every child loves something quirky and unusual. This is a chance to get up close to cars with real character and personality. There really is something for everyone."
Why Wallsend RFC? With numerous venues available across the region, choosing the right location was a key part of planning the event. For Paul, the decision was straightforward. "Wallsend RFC was a shoe-in for us. The location is ideal, with easy access from the Tyne Tunnel, A19 and Coast Road, making it simple for visitors travelling from across the North East and beyond." But location was only part of the attraction. "In today's world, organising public events involves a huge amount of planning around health and safety, traffic management, security and countless other requirements. Wallsend RFC already has the experience, infrastructure and people in place to manage these challenges."
Paul describes the partnership as almost a "plug and play" arrangement. "We bring the attraction, and the club has the capability to provide the support structure around it. From stewarding and parking to security, first aid and facilities, the club has been able to help make the event possible."
A Partnership Built on Community As both the MG Northumbria Club and Wallsend RFC look to bring people together, community remains at the heart of the event. "It's vital that a venue is welcoming, flexible and community-focused. We want people to enjoy a great family day out, tell their friends about it and come back year after year. If the event is successful, we've designed it so it can be replicated and expanded in the future."
Paul is also full of praise for the team behind the scenes at Wallsend RFC. "The management team have been excellent. They've accommodated meetings, site visits and helped us work through challenges as they've arisen. Communication has been fast and efficient throughout. They've also introduced us to local contacts and businesses who have helped with various logistical requirements. It's been a genuinely positive experience from start to finish."
Join us, whether you're a lifelong petrolhead, someone who fondly remembers the cars of years gone by, or simply looking for a great family day out, the MG Northumbria Car Show at Wallsend RFC promises a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere packed with nostalgia, entertainment and community spirit.
As Paul puts it:
"We're not just showcasing cars. We're bringing people together through a shared passion and creating a day that families will want to return to year after year."
See you at Wallsend RFC on the 5th of July, for a fantastic day of classic cars, family fun and community spirit.
